Midland HH54VP2 Portable Emergency Weather Radio with SAME (Black) Reviews

    1. Reception is good. Easy to operate. sound quality is good for such a small unt. Travel mode is a good feature. Needs a car charger. Battery life is short on the first charge(less than 24 hours)but gets better on the second and consecutive charges. Three second delay on the power button and beep when a button is pressed are very anoying features. You need a microscope to read the manual. It does the job for the price.

    2. I purchased the package with the rechargeable battery pack. Very impressed with the standby life of the battery. Took it on a 2 week trip, listened to forecasts a few times per day, left it on during 2 severe weather episodes, still had battery left at the end of the trip. Why not 5 stars? There is an audio confirmation "beep" everytime you press a button, including the volume, that is WAY too loud. No instruction to shut this feature off, e-mails to Midland asking for a work-around have gone unanswered.

    3. This is a good weather radio.Pros:- It allows you to program the S.A.M.E. codes for weather alerts for selected counties.- The speaker can reach a good volume without distortion.- Reception of weather signal is very good.- Travel mode enables easy finding of strongest signal- Alert can be display, tone, or tone followed by voice- Rechargeable battery with dock- Feels nice in the hand, good grip- Strong belt clipSo why only 3 stars?Any button press produces a loud beep. Even button presses to turn the volume all the way down produce loud beeps. There is no way that I can find to turn this "feature" off. This should be a no-brainer for Midland. All of my other electronic devices that have a beep option have the ability to turn it off.If you wanted to listen to the weather forecast and had family or roommates sleeping and you wanted to turn the volume down to not bother them, in order to turn the volume down you would have to press the volume button several times, with each time making a loud beep.If you wanted to set the alarm for the next day, and had family or roommates sleeping, each button press needed to set the alarm would produce a loud beep.I hope that I am overlooking something and that there is a way to turn the beeping off. If that is the case, I will be happy to delete this review and post a 5 star review.

    4. I had the radio setup in under a minute. Very easy. Not a ton of bells and whistles, but it has everything you need. The rechargeable battery is a nice feature (no batteries to replace). Would highly recommend this model over the Oregon Scientific radio. I've owned a couple of the Oregon radios and the Midland is much easier to setup with a comparable feature set.

    5. I give this Emergency Radio the top rating becacuse it already woke me in the early morning hours (I sleep like a ROCK) and warned me of a severe thunder storm coming our way. This gave me time to unplug all my computer equipment before a lightning strike.I'm sold.

    6. This radio may be the weather radio it says it is but I didn't keep it long enough to find out. Straight out of the box it had problems. I called Midland about the questions/problems and they said to return it to them. I would have been much happier if they had answered my questions, sent me a new radio, and then asked me to return the "old" radio at their expense. At my expense, I returned the radio along with a letter explaining the problems/questions I had. Several weeks later I received a "replacement" radio. Since it was not in a bubble wrap, I assume that it was somebody else's radio that they had returned. I didn't think very much of getting a "used/reconditioned" radio for my brand new one. Needless to say there was absolutley no mention of my letter with questons/problems. Soooo I made another phone call to Midland to get some answers and got some. One main concern was battery life which is not mentioned in the owner's manual (which has print too fine to read). After a full charge on the radio, I removed it from the cradle and set it on a counter top. During the next night, I had to get up and when I did, I noticed a red flashing LED alert. The screen was flashing as well with the clock reset to 12:00am. Apparantely the battery had run down and this is the way it alerts people. Why, WHY is not this mentioned in the manual. The radio may be just fine, but the manual is incomplete, very hard to read and I did not enjoy my dealings with Midland. I returned the radio to Amazon while the opportunity presented itself. Don't ask why I didn't simply return it to Amazon - maybe I'm a "newby" at this???
