Reliance Controls THP205 Sump Pump Alarm and Flood Alert Reviews
After I placed the sensor into the sump crock, I would walk away and then within 30 minutes or so it would issue an alarm. The crock did not seem to be all that damp, but the alarm would still trigger. It was way too sensitive. I tried it again in a few weeks to see if it would be any better. This time, it was silent for about an hour and then I got a call from my kids saying that there was an alarm going off in the basement. In the end, I couldn't use it.
If you've ever had your sump pump fail and you have a finished basement, you know what problems and expenses ensue. What a mess!!!The Reliance Controls Sump Pump Alarm and Flood Alert #THP205 is a simple device with a probe that sticks to the side of your sump basket. When the water level reaches the point beyond where your sump pump would ordinarily start to pump, the Flood Alert gives off a loud warning signal. Two days after I installed the Flood Alert, the float ball that triggers the on switch on my sump pump got stuck under the edge of the drain tile; the water rise and would have overrun the sump basket, but the Flood Alert began screaming and I adjusted the position of the sump pump before any water rose above the sump basket.
So I bought this item for my sump pit. The sensor has a suction cup, and the top of my pump float switch is smooth, seemed the perfect place to attach the sensor -- if the water keeps rising when the float is at the top, this means the pump is being overrun (or broken), and I want to know about it pronto! Big mistake. So I tested the alarm by dipping the sensor into a cup of water -- worked great, as promised -- and stuck the sensor on top of the float switch, which was the only suitable smooth surface there. Yet after recent record rains when the water rose way higher than the sensor (it was at least 1/2 foot under water, for several hours), the alarm remained silent. Puzzled, I started experimenting with it more to figure out why. And, sure enough, if you lower the sensor into a cup of water slowly keeping it horizontal, a large air bubble remains in there between the leads and prevents it from working! This looks like a big design flaw. Now I have it in the pit vertically, aligned such that one of the openings in the sensor enclosure is at the top, to allow the air to escape. Placing it this way wasn't as convenient as before (there's no smooth flat vertical surface to attach the suction cup to), but hopefully it will make it work better next time, if there's one.So the bottom line is, make sure that your sensor is not attached horizontally.
I purchased this product because of its low battery signal. This is a feature that it does not have. What the directions do instruct you to do is test the alarm, and if it sounds weak then replace the battery. If i did not need the alarm asap then I would return it. other wise it operates as described.
Very good product. The sensor has a suction cup that can help attach it to smooth surfaces. The sensor is small enough that it can fit in small nooks and the long wire to the alarm allows you to place the actual alarm a few feet away. The alarm has 2 sounds: alarm or music. Terrific product
I purchased this product in 2009. It was placed in an air conditioner drain in a hall closet, where I had problems with the drain clogging and backing up, overflowing onto carpeted floors. Since then, it has activated 4 times. Each time it awakened me from a sound sleep. And each time there was indeed a lot of water starting to accumulate. This LOW-COST item works wonderfully and has saved me literally thousands of dollars in maintenance, cleanup and replacement of carpeting over the past three years. I would strongly recommend it.
I have the sensor hanging in my sump pump. It did go off one time when my power went off and I could hear it from upstairs.
