Kohler K-4639-NG Cachet Round-Front Toilet Seat with Q3 Advantage, Tea Green Reviews
I bought this toilet seat to replace a wooden /painted white one that was in the house we purchased. I have always hated the wooden painted seats because they tend to stain and the paint will scratch off or peel off after some time. This seat is a thicker quality than those flimsy cheap seats you can get and I like the "quiet close" feature, works very well. I would never buy a wooden toilet seat - buy this one instead!
Recently came across this type of toilet seat in a Hyatt hotel and liked the concept. The toilet seat closes quietly with just a touch -- it does not require you to keep your hand on it all the way down to prevent a bang. After installing it, we discovered that it is also easy to remove for cleaning. The only minus is that I don't find the contouring of the seat to be as comfortable as our old one.
I thought this was the best thing since perforated toilet paper, like many other reviewers, but after a few weeks of use the seat starts to get very loose and the cheap thin plastic "hinge holder" eventually breaks. I called their customer service who promptly sent a new seat(without even verifying any info, which tells me this is a very common problem) When it arrived the snap cover for the "hinge holder" was already broken in the box!! I haven't had time to deal with it since and have been wobbling around every time I use it, I'm going now to buy something I can BOLT DOWN.
With two energetic little boys in the house, I have been thinking to get toilet seats with slow close feature. I have 3 Kohler toilets in the house, that is the only reason I prefer to stay with Kohler toilet seat (so the seat brand matches the toilet brand). Before I made the purchase, I read all the reviews on Amazon. Many good reviews about this Kohler toilet seat, but also many bad reviews. The bad reviews are mostly complaining about not being able to tighten the bolt/nut, wiggles of the seat after installation, cheap plastic hardware parts. However, I decided to buy one from local Lowes and gave it a try. Thinking if it does not work, I will just return it locally. It took me 2 attempts to install the seat properly. In my 1st attempt, I was not able to tighten the metal bolt and black plastic nut together. The thread size of the black plastic nut seemed to be larger than the thread size of the metal bolt. The metal bolt moves in and out freely inside the black plastic nut. I worried that I had the same problems as other reviewers had. So I called Kohler for support. The black plastic nut has a "cone" shape head and 4 slots on the side. The "cone" head is designed to go inside the "seat mounting hole" of the toilet bowel and the 4 slots are design to let nut slide freely onto the bolt (before tighten it). During installation, after sliding the nut all the way up on the bolt, it's very IMPORTANT to make sure the tip of "cone" head of the nut is sitting inside the "seat mounting hole" of the toilet bowel. Use one hand to hold the nut stationary and firmly up against toilet bowel inside the "mounting hole", while use the other hand to tighten the metal bolt with a screw driver. When the "cone" head of the nut goes further inside the "mounting hole" of the toilet bowel (during tightening), the 4 slots on the side of the nut close in and reduce the thread size of the nut. This makes the threads on the nut "bite" into the threads on the bolt. After understanding the mechanism, the design is actually quite smart. In my 2nd attempt, I was able to tighten the bolt/nut firmly. The seat does not wiggle much. The seat is comfortable. The quiet close feature works great. Since I just installed it, I cannot comment on the durability of this toilet seat.At the moment, I give it a 4-star instead of a 5-star rating. The reason is that Kohler should have written a better installation instruction. This toilet seat does not come with a written installation instruction. The only instruction is the sketched instruction printed on the box which does not clearly point out the importance of making sure the "cone" head of the nut is sitting inside the "seat mounting hole" of the toilet. At least, it's not obvious to me and some other customers.
The hinge design on this seat it terrible. It's not good out of the box and it only gets worse as time goes on until the seat just slides around every time you sit. I just replaced it with the Mayfair wood quiet-close, it's got a much better hinge design and the seat feels much more substantial than the thin plastic of the Kohler.
Overall satisfied with this product, went on easy and looks fine. The only thing that bugs me slightly is that the opening is a bittoo small.
