DEWALT DW7670 8-Inch 24-Tooth Stacked Dado Set Reviews
I have had several Stacked dados and the Dewalt is by far the best, it has true flat bottom cut and very little splintering upon exiting the material. That would be eliminated if I used a piece of stock at the exiting of the material. Kenneth Parmer Columbia, MO
This dado set replaced a very good Freud SD208. The DW7670 set has (6) 4-tooth chippers as opposed to the Freud's (5) 2-tooth chippers. The 7670 also has 24 tooth outside cutters....twice what the SD208 had. The result of the extra teeth is a smoother bottom on dados and rabbets. The SD208 left minor striping marks on the bottom...it's a small issue, but is nice not to have the marks at all. It also seems to make cleaner cuts along the edges. The shim stock and carrying case are much nicer on the DeWalt, however the DW's teeth have smaller carbide than the Freud, and the chippers aren't as massive. Because the chippers are lighter weight, the DW7670 comes up to speed alot faster, and allows deeper cuts with less bogging down on my saw....an added benefit I had not expected. Other than being made in China, I have no big issues with the set and am happy that I upgraded. It's design is more similar to dado sets costing nearly $200. I've quite happy with the overall performance and especially the great value.
I'm a beginner wood worker or cabinet makerand this is my first stacked dado set.The blades came in a nice case. The widthswere clearly marked on each blade. So assemblingthe right width is easy and straight forwardeven if you loose the instructions. The instructions, while brief, were understandable, and straight forward. There is even a small pocket in the case to hold the instructions. One small gripe with the case is that the shims dont sitnicely in the case, and if you move the case aroundwith it open, like when you move it to the workbenchafter installing the blades for a quick cut, the shimswill not always stay in place. They almost always jumpor slide out of their shallow pocket from within the case. This set performs exactly as expected. There are plenty of shims, so adjusting tothe exact width is not a problem. One of the shims was so thin, that I didntrealize that it was hung up on one of thethreads of the arbor, and as a result, themetal around the hole of the shim became slightlydeformed while I was tightening the blades andthe shim in the saw.I've used the dado set for cutting approx150ft to 200ft of different width dados. Most of themin oak, or oak veneer. The widths I mostcommonly used were 1/4 and 3/4. For some reasonI had to slightly shim out the stack to get exactly3/4. I can't go much larger on my saw, becausethe arbor isn't long enough to accomdate more than3/4 inch stack of dados, even with the stabilizingwasher removed. (My saw has a name printed on itmost commonly associated with plumbing tools.)The resulting dados were smooth, flat bottomed, with nice crisp edges. Very little tear-outor splintering. Just like I would expect. Some had recommended that I get a smaller 6 inch diameterstack, as the weight of an 8 inch diameter stack mightbe a bit much for my 13 AMP saw, but I noticed no problemswith power.I recommend getting or making 2 or 3 zero clearanceinserts for your saw. Then you can use the insert thatwill be sliced up the least for your current dado cut.Keep one for narrow or shallow dados, and another deepand or wide dados.Overall, this set is as good or better than I expected.
I purchased this set after researching several other sets from various manufactures. This was the only dado set in its price range that includes a 3/32 inch chipper. I have used this set to make dadoes in hard maple, cherry, and birch plywood with excellent results. There is virtually no tearout in any of the above materials, the grooves are perfectly flat on the bottoms with very shallow scoring grooves which completely disappeared in the box joints I made. The groove widths are exact requiring no additional shimming to get a perfect fit. After using this set on several projects it appears to be one of the best values out there in an excellent quality dado set, and it even comes in a very good case.
Dado cuts are smooth and clean - no ridges. Corners are crisp and 90 degrees. Case for storage is excellent and with wide selection of metal shims you can get just about any width of cut you desire. Highly recommend. Why pay double the price for the high end other product when this will do the job just as well?
I've used a wobble blade for years and dealt with the hassle of adjusting for a precise fit. The Dewalt dado set not only cuts perfectly clean, square dados, but with the large selection of shims I am able to get the perfect fit every time. I'm very happy with the price and quality.
