This tool was advertised as having a die suitable for Weatherpack style connectors. This is not correct. The dies may work fine for standard open barrel terminals where the secondary crimp is only on the wire insulation, but it does not work on the Weatherpack. The Weatherpack requires a large circular secondary crimp so as to hold the weather seal in place. This tool does a roll crimp, not a circular crimp and it completely crushes the terminal and weather seal.I did not use the other dies and can't comment on how well they might work. The dies are not polished highly as are higher quality tools. I returned this and bought a tool that really does crimp Weatherpack terminals correctly - 12014254 Ratchet Crimping Weatherpack Weather Pack Crimper Tool from Amazon vendor Performance Plus Connection. This tool has highly polished dies, a fixture to hold the terminal in proper alignment and the correct circular crimp to hold the weather seal properly in place.
I did not expect this crimper to perform nearly as well as it has. The jaws are very easy to change out for different terminal ends. The inside of the case is labeled well to let the user know which jaw is needed. I have crimped non-insulated terminals on #10AWG with minimal fuss. The ratcheting mechanism and jaws have performed flawlessly. I give this one an A+.
The tool itself gets 5 stars, but overall loses a star because of packaging. This tool crimps very well and gives pro results but once the dies are removed from their plastic storage positions in the box, it becomes a challenge to store them all again. This is a minor annoyance at home while inspecting the tool but on the job site this becomes a problem.
Bought this because I'm re-wiring my classic car; it's a great tool, factory-perfect crimps every time. On the appropriate dies for the appropriate connectors, it does two different size crimps; one for the insulated part and one for the bare part. I should have bought this years ago. Don't mess around with cheap tools; this is the real professional deal. The cheap ones either just pinch or dent the terminals; this one crimps and uses a ratchet to ensure the crimp is just the right, won't let go until you've supplied sufficient force and then releases automatically when done. If you WANT to let go before the crimp's done, you can manually release the ratchet. If for some reason the automatic pressure isn't exactly right; they're adjustable. Didn't have to adjust mine though. This is not a low priced tool, but with the different sets of dies it's a fair price and worth every penny. If you're going to do something, do it right. If you think this is too much to pay for a tool for a small job then pay someone else who has the tool to do the job right. Given the cost of paying other people to do even small jobs, you might just decide it's worth it to buy the tool and do it yourself, especially if you like doing the work yourself.
This tool allows the user to guarantee that each crimp made applies the exact same pressure each and every time. When your are working on aviation equipment this is a regulatory requirement. A ratcheting crimping device is the only way to ensure you meet the regulatory requiremnt. I have used this tool to crimp insulated connections for an aircraft project and it does exactly what I need it to do every time.Just follow the instructions and you will have an air worthy crimp.I especially like the interchangable anvils, this increases this tools utility tremendously. This is a great tool.
I was looking for a set of AMP crimpers but they were bought out by Tyco and are no longer available.I do aircraft repair and needed this type of crimper to insure that the connections would meet a pull test.I have a set that would meet the pull requirments but left a hole in the insulation, not good for aircraft work.I love these crimpers they do and outstanding crimp and have all the dies that I need and some that I dont.
Other than wishing it was a little less expensive, it works great. Makes great crimps because you have the multiple dies for the right type of connection.
I bought this product to crimp electrical connections on a well pump cable. I first tested the crimper on a few pieces of cable and was very pleased with the result. Since then I have also used this tool to crimp eyebolt and butt connectors on my boat. All of the connections come out perfect without damageing any of the plastic insulation (actually also crimps the plastic part). I dont know how I made it without this tool.
I sure wish I had this product 20 years ago, it would have prevented many an electrical grief. Great quality product. Thanks
Just got this tool in today. Purchased it after reading the reviews. I am completely satisfied. Yes, the case is a little difficult to store the dies, but I found that you must line them up correctly (like they are being put on the tool) and they fit fine. The quality was quite good on both the tool and crimps. For the price, it is well worth the buy. A crimper at a local store that only did the bassic three insulated terminal sizes was $30.00 and the quality was not as good. For the diversity in dies and the price....this tool is just fine. Yeah, maybe the Weatherpack terminals don't work too good, but if I had to use those type frequently, I would buy a specific crimper. Anyhow, good product in my opinion.
