36 inch range hood : Wilton 63144 Heavy-Duty Woodworking ViseCheck Product Rating
This woodworkers vise includes a metal housing which fully encloses the screw, preventing sawdust and dirt from "gumming" the threads. Not only does this keep the threads clean, but it also increases the life of the vises rapid action release mechanism. Front jaw pivots 12 degrees to allow clamping of irregularly shaped objects and the entire front jaw can be "lifted" up and locked in place to serve as a full length dog. Jaw width is 4" x 7". Max. opening is 0". 29 lb. Complete with mounting instructions. Vise shown with optional magnetic maple jaw sold separately. 36 inch range hood : Wilton 63144 Heavy-Duty Woodworking Vise>Compare Prices<
Wilton 63144 Heavy-Duty Woodworking Vise Reviews
I am familiar with Wilton tools. They are absolutely the very best. I bought this one as a gift and I expect my friend to be very happy with it!!!!!!!!!!
I love this Wilton vise. It is my second woodworking vise. I bought the first one in 1951 at age 13. It was made of cast iron. That vise was also fine until one day I found that someone had mysteriously broken the front cast iron jaw.I did without for many years. Now, as an old man, I can do what I want. And I wanted this superb Wilton vise. It is everything anyone could ask for:Heavy, solid construction; the screw is covered to keep dust off (Don't forget to lube the screw occasionally. Easy to do); front jaw has an inner pivoting jaw that accepts odd-shaped items; the pivoting jaw can be removed when necessary and it can be raised to act as a bench dog when working on longer pieces. This vise is good looking, too. You will be proud to show it to your friends.Oh, yes. The vise of my childhood did not begin to compare to this Wilton.I highly recommend this Wilton vise.
This is the first woodworkers vise that I have ever owned, and I did as much research as possible before buying. I found at least four models in various 'box' stores and woodworkers stores. Every one seemed crudely made. I compared a few models available from Amazon, but lacked enough experience to make an informed choice. I ordered the Wilton because of the generally favorable reviews. It looks and feels like a quality tool. I think that I will like the fact that the screw is covered by the frame, and will not easily collect dust. My first serious use was to debark some small logs. I found that the outside jaw face swiveled nicely to provide a firm grip on almost any log, the mechanism was quick to operate and a pleasure to use, and there was no 'give' whatsoever when I peeled off large strips of wood with my drawknife.I am really happy with my choice.
This thing is a BEAST, very heavy (be careful installing, seriously). Works flawlessy, easily opens, closes. Swivel jaw is nice touch, easily removed if you prefer (which would gain you a couple of inches if you needed it in a pinch). Instead of a one-inch wide "dog," the entire face will slide up for pinning a workpiece on your bench against a bench dog -- again, an excellent feature I used right away. Comes with steel handle, purists can easily substitute one they've made themselves on a lathe or from a dowel. Could mount this anywhere on your bench, I mounted it mid-bench. Wilton's been making vises since Noah got off of the ark, and they know how to do it right.
If you can find the money to spend, and you think this vise might fit your needs, don't hesitate. Super quality. 30lbs solid. Quick-release screw. Easy to use. Just make sure your workbench can take the weight. You need 7-inches of overhang, and, personally, I don't think a single sheet of plywood will hold it over time... This is a great pro-quality vise.
