I've been using this product for over a month, I purchased this pump with a 16 x 48 ultra and it works perfect, I have crystal clear water always. I suggest if you buy an intex pool throw away the included cartridge pump and get one of these, it pays for itself because you won't have to buy chlorine or filters.
Does wonders for a 15 ft metal frame intex pool. I don't even bother covering the pool, also use the side mount skimmer, and the ladybug floor creeper once a week. Had to be careful while cutting larger holes for the new valves.. Did it while it was full of water.. Almost not a good idea, the sudden burst of water will move even the steadiest of hands. I use well water to fill the pool, hard water.. I end up back flushing every other week and CLR the plates also. But this design makes it so much easier to inspect, remove and clean, way better than the smaller units. Water is crystal clear, and the sides and bottom have that nice rubber squeaky noise, NO ALGEEEE. Best buy of the year. When this pool dies I'm gonna go bigger because it's no hasstle to keep it clean and shiny.
Bought this because my SWCG (salt water chlorine generator) went out after a few years and paper filter replacement and hastles of cleaning were sucking the fun out of having a pool. We use this new new Sand Filter and SWG system with a 24ft x 52in Intex pool and it works great. I like that one timer controls both the pump and the SWCG system. The old paper filters would cause the system to lose some pressure in a few days. This new system loses no pressure. I backwash every 2 weeks to clean out the dirt and no pressure loss in those 2 weeks. When I received the brand new unit it had a bad pump motor. Called Intex and they sent a new one at no charge (actually thay sent the whole timer/motor/base unit so I just plugged in the hoses). Works like a charm.I have been using this for a month now. I like that this system requires much less maintenance and 1 timer runs everything so no out of sync timing issues (no seperate timer for pump and SWCG).UPDATE 4/3/2012: See comments for update.
Pool Specs:18' x 52" above ground, vinyl, metal walled (not intex)I bought this pump (about 2 months ago) instead of the one the pool company suggested and have yet to regret my decision. They kept telling me it wouldnt keep my pool clean, the parts arent compatible, salt isnt good for metal... blah blah blah....The first month I did nothing but add salt but then trouble free pool website suggested I add chlorine (just household bleach) to shock since the salt water generator doesnt only slowly raises the chlorine levels. I havnt done anything but vacuum, brush and shock about once a week and she remains sparkling clean with perfect chem levels. The pump does come with adapters to convert to 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" fittings. I did have to hit up the local home improvement store for pipe fittings since the rubber gaskets and stoppers that come with the pump kept slipping off and leaking from them. Minor fix but the system works like a dream!
Pool size: 15 X 48 Intex.Water type: City water. The original Pump is an Intex 637 (800 gph).First two season I used Chlorine (HTH Products) and Bleach (Bleach is the same as Chlorine But in liquid form and much cheaper and works faster it does not have to dissolve)I am going on the third Season with this pool. The first two seasons I had issues with keeping the pool clean. There were always debris (Bugs and Grass) in the water where the Skimmer or the side cover screen would not get the pool clean. If the pool had high usage. I had to run the pump 24/7 and clean the filter ever 2 days. The paper filter would only last a week with heavy pool use. I spent more time clean the pool than actually enjoying it. I even purchased a Reusable filer from EBay (RinzNreuz) This filter helped but has to be rinsed a lot. It did save money on the paper filters.Purchased the new sand pump for season 3. Also purchased the Deluxe Maintenance Kit.Purchased 100LB of Pool sand from Leslie Pool supply. Cost 30$.It took about 4 hours to setup the pump.Cut out the Black Nipples for the old pump. I used a sharp Utility Knife and cut about 1/4 of an inch outside of them. The new connections are great (Plunger valve assemble). They sit straight and do not sag the vinyl pool liner. They are also easy to shut off for Pump maintenance. I did not use the conversion Couplers. This will reduce the water flow. They work great No issues with it sealing. (Like other Review posts about this)Followed all of the instructions. Backed washed and rinsed the sand then turned it on to Filter. The Pump filled the pool with sand. I had about 15 or 20 LB of sand in the pool. Shut it off. Took the sand filter cartridge apart.Removed all of the sand and washed it out. Placed the white Center Pipe and Filter grid back in. Very carefully reloaded the sand (Being sure to not to move the Center pipe when reassembling). Ran thought the back wash/rinsed cycle. The pump started working correctly. I used the Deluxe Maintenance Kit to suck up all of the sand back into the filter.I have set the pump to run 2 hours a day. I think the sand media is too fine. I still get some sand in the pool. I just use the Deluxe Maintenance Kit That attaches to the skimmer to clean the bottom of the pool.Leslie Pool supply said that the sand is the correct size but I think it is not. I may add a second filter on top of the Filter grid to keep the sand from coming through or wiill get new sand from a different Company.Converted to salt (80 LB Cost 14$) a few days after the pool was up and running. So far this season there has been fewer bugs and debris in the pool. The new pump pumps 2650 gph. This is great for a 3700 Galloon pool. The water is turned over all most 2X in 2 hours. The water has been crystal clear. I am also saving money on Electricity not having to run the new Pump 24X7 just to attempt to keep up.I have added the Stabilizer called Cyanuric acid.I also add 1X per week Clarifier and Algae Guard. The copper Purifying unit also helps with this.I also put in a 3' Tab in the skimmer to help keep the Chlorine level up in high usage periods. This seems to be better than running the boost cycle and using extra electricity. I think that the cost either way maybe about the same. The boost cycle for this pump that is set to run for 2 hours day is = to 8 hours. Way over kill for my small pool, But would be good to run the pump when parties are going on.I have also seen a 15 X 48 pool setup and left out for 3 years in the weather and was using the salt system. The white metal polls just rusted and fell apart.I would wash off the polls and put them in storage after ever season. We used a 4 X 6 Rubbermaid Shed to store our pool supplies/equipment in. We actually take down the whole pool ever year.Season 1 we had some nut Grass grow though the tarp and pool liner. I had to patch the pool. I did the patching from the outside after the season was over. Do not patch on the inside the glue will turn yellow and the patch spots will look bad.I have put down weed Block then a Tarp to cover the ground. This resolved the grass growing through the liner. I have also added a Plastic edging around the pool to safe guard the pool from the weed eater. The pump is a much better unit. I would recommend it to any with a 15 X 48 pool or larger. Less Maintenance I have a crystal clear pool with no debris floating around in mid water. I would also cut out the Black nipples in the pool liner if you have them. Just take your time and use a sharp utility knife.
